Firefighters from throughout the state are expected in Lawrence this weekend for the annual conference and workshop of the Kansas State Council of Firefighters.
Lawrence Local 1596 of the International Association of Firefighters is holding the conference, which begins today and runs through Saturday at the Holidome.
Jay Stalcup, president of Local 1596, said about 60 firefighters are expected to attend the conference. The Lawrence local last held the event in 1987.
Today's activities include an address by Kathleen Sebelius, Kansas insurance commissioner, and an all-day session on union negotiating strategies presented by Dave Spencer from the University of Indiana.
Activities on Friday include a presentation on the Kansas Police and Fire Retirement System and a program by two members of the Oklahoma City Fire Department on the bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building.
Other speakers during the conference will include Alfred K. Whitehead, general president of the International Association of Firefighters; Gale Haag, Kansas State fire marshal; and Robert Wing, Kansas City, Kan., president of the Kansas State Council of Firefighters.
The conference will conclude with a dinner cruise Friday night at Perry Lake and a casino night at DJ's Marina.
All proceeds from the casino night will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Assn.
