Overland Park Sophomore Mary Jones headed in a penalty kick and Kansas edged Toledo, 1-0, on Sunday for its first soccer victory.
Freshman Kerry Durig earned the assist in the game played at the Shawnee Mission Soccer Complex. The goal came at the 46:22 mark.
"It was going in anyway," Jones said. "I think I just helped it out a little bit."
Kansas held Toledo, which suffered its first defeat, to just nine shots on goal. Sophomore Erin Hon was in goal for the Jayhawks.
"It feels real good," KU coach Lori Walker said afterward. "I'm really proud of the team. They showed a lot of heart out there."
Kansas had 15 shots on goal, a third of them by freshman Denise Cooke. Jones and sophomore Heather Heidel had three shots apiece.
Kansas, now 1-2, is scheduled to host Iowa State on Friday and Mississippi on Sunday.
The site of those games is undetermined. Kansas has been playing its home games in Overland Park because the sod on its new field in Lawrence hasn't taken hold yet.
