What are those black boxes mounted on the stoplight posts at Sixth and Vermont and at Sixth and Kentucky?

The black boxes at those intersections, plus at the intersection of Sixth and Massachusetts streets, are set to prevent vehicles from turning onto railroad tracks leading to the Lawrence Journal-World, said David Woosley, the city's traffic engineer.

The boxes light up when a train's coming, warning vehicles about possible dangers ahead, he said.

"That's so you don't make that right turn and run into a train," he said.
