Mayor Bob Moody gave up two tickets to this afternoon's Kansas-Kansas State football game to attend this morning's grand reopening of the Community Building.
"If you haven't been there to see it, you really need to see it," Moody said. "It was a good facility before, but now it's a tremendous facility."
Moody will cut a ribbon and shoot a basket during a reception at the Community Building, 115 W. 11th. The open house runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and free play will go from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The building has been closed to the public for six months, giving crews time to install air conditioning, upgrade locker rooms and a fitness center and replace the wooden floor beneath new basketball goals.
Since renovations began in 1991, the city has poured nearly $1.27 million into the 55-year-old former National Guard Armory. Another $250,000 in renovations are scheduled for next year, the project's final phase.
