Lew Tilford, Lawrence school district's director of fine arts, recently was named Outstanding Kansas Art Educator in Supervision and Administration.
Tilford, who has been fine arts director since 1987, received the honor from the Kansas Art Education Assn. He was nominated by Betsy Weaver, docent program coordinator at Kansas University's Spencer Museum of Art.
Weaver said Tilford has been supportive of the museum's efforts to increase the number of elementary school students who visit the museum each year. In addition, he's helped increase the role that elementary art teachers play in the students' education about the museum.
"Lew has always been very supportive in this," she said.
Tilford joined the Lawrence school district in 1970 as chorale music instructor at Lawrence High School.
As fine arts director, he is responsible for all arts education of children in kindergarten through 12th grade. That includes music, visual arts, and theater and drama programs.
"I was really surprised when I was notified of the award and very pleased and very honored," he said, adding that his staff deserves much of the credit for the recognition.
