- Lawrence High’s volleyball team is embarking on its best season in the 25-year history of the program, which says a lot considering the Lions’ illustrious tradition featuring 14 state championships and four perfect seasons. The Lions, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A and nationally with a 37-0 record heading into sub-state this weekend, are on pace to set the school record for victories in a season.

- A former Kansas City Chiefs and current sports announcer for Fox television network will receive an award today from Kansas University. Kevin Harlan, a veteran football and basketball broadcaster who covers the National Football League for Fox TV, will receive the Kansas University Radio and Television 1995 Alumni Honor Citation.

- Why, after a Lawrence High School football game, coverage is on the front page with a color picture, but after LHS soccer games, they’re on page six, with no picture? The sports department tries hard to balance coverage of all sports events for boys and girls, but it is not always possible. However, there is no denying that Lawrence High football, based on its long history of winning, is the most visible sport at LHS.

- Ray Davis was elected vice chairman and Kay Kent was elected treasurer of the Lawrence Memorial Hospital board of trustees on Wednesday. The positions had been held by Don Johnston and Stephen Craig, whose terms on the board expired earlier this month. The two were passed over by Mayor Bob Moody for reappointment.

Townsend Peterson, curator of birds at the Kansas University Natural History Museum, said he didn’t think anyone had ever counted the number of franklin’s gulls that migrate to Lawrence every winter. Therefore, it’s difficult to say whether there are more than usual.

- Regarding Friends and Neighbors photographs, is it necessary to have a model/publishing release accompanying that photo or does the Journal-World print them without releases? “We don’t require model releases, but we do contact the people in the photos or if the subjects are youngsters, we call their parents or grandparents before we publish the photographs,” said Bill Snead, Journal-World deputy editor.
- LOCAL CRIME STOPPERS ADDS TO REWARD FUND

- A recent fundraiser has added $4,500 to the local Crime Stoppers reward fund. About 100 runners and walkers participated in the Sept. 30 Run for Justice, a fundraiser for Crime Stoppers of Lawrence and Douglas County, according to Lawrence Police Officer Victoria Moore, Crime Stoppers coordinator. The event included both 5K and 10K runs, a two-mile walk and a one-mile children’s race.

- Eighty-five years after its establishment, Camp Fire Boys and Girls continues to provide educational and leadership opportunities for youth. Founded in 1910 by Dr. Luther Gulick, head of the Department of Child Hygiene at Russell Sage Foundation, and his wife, Charlotte, an author of articles published on child development, the organization sought to improve the conditions of youths in society. The group — originally named Camp Fire Girls— opened the membership to boys in 1976.

- Several area artists will show their work Saturday and Sunday at the Maple Leaf Festival Art Show in Baldwin. The exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days at the Baldwin City Library. The exhibition then will continue during regular library hours until Nov. 3.

- Topeka West head football coach Warren Seitz hasn’t forgotten last season’s 45-12 loss to Lawrence High. The Lions, scoring at will in the first half, rushed for 575 yards on 40 plays (14.4 yards a carry) and never looked to pass. They led 33-0 with 10:37 left in the first half after running just 14 plays.

- Oklahoma has Thunder and Lightning on offense, but a bigger storm’s brewing on the defensive side. OU’s aggressive defensive football front has recorded 20 sacks through six games and has played a key role in the Sooners’ dominating rushing defense. Opponents have gained just 69.7 rushing yards per game against the Sooners, a figure that ranks No. 1 in the Big Eight and No. 2 nationally.

- Is it true that Hugh Beaumont, who played Ward Cleaver, was originally from Lawrence,or had lived here? Beaumont, known for his role as the father in the popular TV show “Leave It to Beaver,” was born in Kansas, but a controversy exists over whether he was born in Lawrence or near Eudora, according to Judy Sweets, registrar and exhibit coordinator at Watkins Community Museum, 1047 Mass. Sweets said Beaumont’s father was a traveling salesman and the family eventually relocated to Colony.

- The Kansas law that allows minors to consume cereal malt beverage if the person’s parent or legal guardian purchased the beverage and if the parent or guardian is permitting and supervising its consumption applies only to 3.2 beer that is consumed in private settings. The law provides for no prosecution of parents who serve cereal malt beverage to their children and no prosecution of the minors who consume under these circumstances. However, operators of drinking establishments can be prosecuted for allowing such consumption in their establishments. Information concerning the law was not clear in a story printed in Monday’s Journal-World.

- The dean of Kansas University’s social welfare school said a colleague who died Wednesday will “leave a large hole in the school and the profession.” Liane Vida Davis, associate dean of the school and professor of social welfare, died in her home Wednesday of cancer. She was 53.
