Lawrence police officers got the ball rolling by signing a work agreement with the city in June 1994, which included enhanced benefits -- including dental coverage, increased sick leave and longevity pay.
Earlier this year, Lawrence city commissioners followed that up by agreeing to extend similar benefits to all city employees for next year -- with the exception of firefighters, who are governed by a separate bargaining agreement.
Last week, commissioners met in executive session to discuss personnel matters. Fire Chief Jim McSwain attended the commission meeting.
The negotiated agreement would bring firefighters up to the same level with other city employees.
The new agreement, if formally approved by both firefighters and commissioners, would remain in effect until Dec. 31, 1997.
