A band of crowbar-wielding Old West Lawrence residents will storm the 700 block of Mississippi on Saturday.
Their target: A 3-inch layer of cracked asphalt.
Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. to start chipping away at the thin sheet of blacktop atop the residential street, part of the association's goal of restoring original brick streets.
"This is like picking a big scab, only more fun," said Michael Morley, the association's special events coordinator.
He said volunteers should bring "prying things," which include crowbars, picks and shovels. The association will rent a small bucket truck to handle major work.
Traffic barricades will close the block Saturday. Lunch will be provided for workers, who can look forward to a party once the work is done.
Morley, who lives at 700 Miss., said that exposing the original brick street should enhance the neighborhood's historic character, slow traffic and improve drainage.
