Two Baker University students are vying for top scholarships, the university announced recently.
Kristen Kerksiek, a biology major from Strasburg, Colo., and Dawn Gardner, a biology major from Shreveport, La., are the university's nominees for the Rhodes and Marshall scholarships.
Kerksiek is studying this semester at Harlaxton College in Grantham, England, as part of Baker's study abroad program. A leader on Baker's softball team last spring, she was named an All-American Scholar-Athlete by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Kerksiek was nominated for both the Marshall and Rhodes scholarships, while Gardner was nominated for the Marshall award.
Gardner recently spent six months at an internship at Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago, where she worked with plant ecologists to study prairie plants and grasses. In April, she received the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.
The Rhodes Scholarship provides a stipend for two years of postgraduate study at Oxford University. The Marshall Scholarship supports two years of postgraduate study at any British university.
