Criminal case proceedings
- A 20-year-old man was sentenced this week to a year in the Douglas County Jail for the misdemeanor theft of property from a Lawrence residence earlier this year. Tyrone Edwards, no address listed, originally faced charges of burglary and theft in connection with the Aug. 12 break-in at the home in the 900 block of Lawrence Avenue. Edwards is to serve the sentence consecutively with an earlier sentence imposed for an unrelated attempted robbery conviction.
- Phillip R. Belden, 27, Leavenworth, recently was granted probation for his conviction on a charge of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. Belden was charged in June after police found drugs in his car while investigating a report that he had been trying to sell drugs at a business in the 1000 block of North Third. Court records indicate Belden was sentenced to 15 months in prison and ordered to pay court costs and $150 restitution. He is to spend three years on probation.
- Tony Becker, 21, Topeka, was recently granted two years of probation for his conviction on a charge of criminal use of a financial card. The charge stemmed from an incident in January during which Becker went on a shopping spree with a stolen credit card.
- Chad M. Harck, 24, 414 W. 12th, recently was granted three years of probation for his conviction on a charge of cultivation of marijuana. The charge stemmed from an August 1994 investigation by the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Unit. During that investigation, authorities found 27 marijuana plants growing inside Harck's residence.
