A rural Ottawa man was sentenced Monday to eight months in prison for his conviction on a charge stemming from the shooting of a Lawrence youth last summer.
Aarron D. Moore, 18, was taken into custody immediately after the sentencing, said John Wilcox, assistant Franklin County attorney. Before imposing the sentence, District Judge Thomas Sachse denied a defense motion that Moore be granted probation.
The sentence is the maximum Moore could have received under Kansas sentencing guidelines.
Moore pleaded guilty last month to an amended complaint charging him with the attempted aggravated battery of Wesley R. McDonald. He entered the plea after a Franklin County jury was unable to reach a verdict on whether he was guilty of the more serious charge of aggravated battery.
McDonald, 17, was shot once in the neck late June 27 during a disturbance in Haley Park in Ottawa. He was released after treatment at an Ottawa hospital.
