A student scheduled to graduate Sunday from Kansas University was found dead in his Lawrence apartment hours before the ceremony, police said early this afternoon.
Robert Nye, 23, Leawood, was discovered by family members about 11:30 a.m. Sunday in his apartment on Hanover Place.
His mother, Lynne, said Robert was a diabetic. He apparently had a severe insulin reaction, lost consciousness and died.
"We had him longer than we ever thought," Mrs. Nye said. "He was a very happy kid. He was a good kid."
Robert, a graduate of Shawnee Mission East High School, had completed requirements for a bachelor of arts degree in history. He had been accepted to Rockhurst College, where he planned to earn a master's degree.
He belonged to Theta Chi fraternity at KU and had served as president of his pledge class and vice president.
Mrs. Nye said the family was planning a memorial service for June. She asked that memorials be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
