The threat of dousing rains Sunday convinced organizers of Art in the Park '95 to postpone the annual arts and crafts festival until next week.
``We decided that the forecast looked so foreboding that the prospects of having any kind of pleasurable experience were pretty dim,'' said organizer Lori Woodard.
``We wouldn't have had a good crowd, and the artists would have been disappointed, and it was very possible some things would have been damaged,'' she said.
The annual fund-raiser for the Lawrence Art Guild has been rescheduled for noon to 5 p.m. Sunday in South Park. Thus, for the second year in a row, Art in the Park will coincide with Mother's Day.
``Last year when it was on Mother's Day, we had one of our best days ever in terms of sales. I guess people thought it would be a good thing to bring their mothers to,'' Woodard said.
More than 90 artists were slated to display and sell their work Sunday. Organizers expect most of them to make next week's date, which is also Kansas University's commencement day.
``Some of them have commitments to other festivals. But last year, a vast majority of the artists were able to display the following week,'' Woodard said.
Sunday's cancellation also marks the third year in a row that Art in the Park has been postponed from its original date due to rain.
``I suppose we're having a wet May trend or something. I don't know,'' Woodard said.
