A 37-year-old rural Lawrence man died early Saturday after a fiery head-on collision about five miles southwest of Lawrence.
Richard A. Stewart, 735 E. 661 Diagonal Rd., was pronounced dead at 12:14 a.m. Saturday at the Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., where he was transported by helicopter after the accident.
Douglas County sheriff's officers reported that Stewart was westbound on Douglas County Road 458 when the car he was driving collided with an eastbound vehicle driven by Troy L. Treinen, 23, Osage City, about 8:30 p.m. Friday.
Deputies said the car Treinen was driving went off the road and caught fire after the collision.
Both drivers became trapped. Sheriff's officers and rescue workers using extrication equipment freed Stewart, and passing motorists were able to pull Treinen from the burning vehicle.
Treinen was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition Saturday evening. A passenger in Stewart's car, Terry A. Stewart, who lives at the same Lawrence address, was treated at LMH and released, a hospital representative said.
Officers said it appeared that the vehicle driven by Treinen went left of center before the collision.
Other information about the accident was unavailable Saturday as officers continued their investigation.
