A 22-year-old man died after the car he was riding in went out of control and struck a utility pole late Thursday in Jefferson County.
Jefferson County sheriff's officers said the victim, Richard Miller, Leavenworth, died after being taken to St. Francis Hospital, Topeka. Time of death was unavailable.
Officers were notified about the accident at 11:28 p.m. Thursday by a resident near the accident scene, on Kansas Highway 92 about four miles west of Oskaloosa.
Officers said Miller was one of five people in an eastbound 1982 Dodge Challenger that slid out of control on a curve, entered the ditch and struck a utility pole.
The driver, Matthew Balke, 19, was taken to Cushing Memorial Hospital, Leavenworth, where he was treated for minor injuries and released, officers said. Two passengers, Jeffrey Burton, 27, and Jeffrey Walters, 16, also were treated at Cushing Memorial Hospital and released.
Another passenger, Thomas Anderson, 14, was taken by helicopter to Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center, Topeka, where he was undergoing surgery late this morning. A condition report was unavailable.
