Two Lawrence area residents suffered severe injuries Wednesday night in a two-vehicle accident about three miles south of Tonganoxie.

A spokeswoman in the Leavenworth County Sheriff's office said the accident occurred about 7:30 p.m. on Leavenworth County Road 1, just north of Hemphill Road.

The accident report indicates that Nicholas J. Bichelmeyer, 18, DeSoto, was northbound on the county road when he swerved to miss a southbound pickup that had crossed the center line. Bichelmeyer then lost control of his Pontiac Firebird, which collided broadside with a southbound Toyota pickup driven by Julian B. Tiner, 40, Eudora.

Bichelmeyer and Rhiannan E. Tiner, 10, Eudora, a passenger in the Tiner vehicle, were both transported to the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., by LifeFlight Air Ambulance.

A hospital spokeswoman said Bichelmeyer was listed in critical condition and Rhiannan Tiner was listed in serious condition this morning.

Neither Julian Tiner nor another passenger in his vehicle, Justin J. Tiner, 14, Eudora, were reported as being injured in the accident.
