If the county is wanting to save some money, why do they hire a cab to deliver food to the Northeast Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center? What is the cost of this?
City Cab Co. transports meals from the Douglas County Jail, 11 E. 11th, to the juvenile detention center, 110 N.E. Industrial Ln., 18 times a week at a cost of $6 per trip. For each meal, the cab driver delivers food for all detention center inmates and then returns to pick up the transporting containers, which are then taken back to the county jail kitchen.
Juvenile Detention Director Pam Weigand said staffing is scheduled tightly to conform to security needs and regulations. Additional staff would have to be hired to transport the meals.
``If we were paying someone to do it, it would cost more than $6 a ride,'' she said.
