Is it against the law to charge tax on postal stamps? I know of one grocery store in town that does, while a couple others don't.

Stamps are exempt from sales tax, according to Steve Stotts, an analyst in the research and revenue analysis bureau of the Kansas Department of Revenue in Topeka.

"If we know who it is who's doing it, we'll have someone give them a call and tell them not to charge sales tax anymore," Stotts said.

The revenue department will refund any taxes paid, but the purchaser would need receipts.

"You're probably talking about cents, and they'd probably spend more on a stamp mailing a letter to us than what they paid," Stotts said.
