Quentin Rials tamed Wichita's Cougars on Saturday afternoon at Ice Field.

Rials struck out eight batters while allowing just two hits and one walk in the Lawrence Raiders' 5-0 Al Ice Tournament victory over the Cougars. Lawrence won the late game Saturday, 11-1, over Waterloo Valley, Neb.

``I felt relaxed and in control of the game,'' Rials said. ``My motion was fluid and my arm never got tired.''

Rials' control on a hot day impressed Raiders' coach Lee Ice.

``Quentin pitched an excellent game,'' Ice said. ``He didn't allow more than one batter to reach base without getting a hit. Anytime you're pitcher does that you're going to be in the game.''

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when catcher Mark Unruh's roller to the second baseman scored Ryan Morrissey from third.

Andy Johnston rapped a two-run single and Jim Ward an RBI single as the Raiders led 4-0 after four innings. Rials was in control the rest of the way.

Late Friday night, the Raiders beat Ralston, Neb., 17-8, in a game that ended at 11:55 p.m. The Raiders had three errors in that game.

``The difference between the two games is night and day,'' Ice said. ``Last night (Friday) we were terrible on defense, but we used our bats to survive. Today (Saturday) we won with defense and pitching.''

In the Waterloo Valley game, Lawrence pitcher Gabe Ragland allowed four hits and did not surrender a walk.

Johnston went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a home run to highlight the Raiders' offense.

``We pitched well, played solid defense and had timely hitting,'' Ice said. ``We'll win just about every game we put those three together.''

Despite a 4-0 record in pool play, the Raiders may miss today's championship game because of a tiebreaker. If Shawnee Mission beats Wichita and Wichita scores fewer than nine runs, Shawnee Mission wins the American League division and will play in the 3 p.m. championship game. The Raiders would qualify for the title game if Shawnee Mission loses or Manhattan beats Kirkwood, Mo.
