in bank larceny
A Lawrence woman pleaded guilty today in federal court to taking more than $7,000 from Mercantile Bank of Lawrence while she worked there, prosecutors said.
Linda D. Derks, 25, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Earl O'Connor in Kansas City, Kan., to one count of taking and carrying away for her own use and benefit about $7,453 of bank funds, said Kurt Shernuk, an assistant U.S. attorney.
Derks worked as an administrative assistant and customer service representative at Mercantile Bank from January 1993 to July 1994. Prosecutors said the money was taken between December 1993 and July 1994.
Derks was indicted on Dec. 15. She will be sentenced by O'Connor on April 17 and faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Derks' attorney, Charlie Atwell of Kansas City, Mo., could not be reached for comment.
