A Lawrence businessman has been elected chairman of the 3rd Congressional District Republican Party.

John Watkins, president of Western Tech Inc., which owns 36 cable television systems across Kansas, was picked by party delegates at a meeting last week in Johnson County.

Watkins will serve a two-year term in the district, which includes Douglas,Wyandotte, Johnson and Miami counties. The former chair was Betty Hanicke, Johnson County.

"My interest is in making sure that the party has the biggest tent possible. We want it long and wide and four feet high. Big shots need not apply," Watkins said today.

His duties include coordinating the activities of the county chairs to help candidates during election years and to make sure the public understands the party's message, he said.

As chairman of the 3rd District, Watkins will also serve on the GOP state committee. Other local delegates on the state committee are Susan Smith and Joe Gilman, Lawrence, and David Miller, Eudora.

The state committee will meet on Jan. 28 during the GOP's Kansas Day activities.
