More than 20 volunteers, including some from Lawrence, have been mobilized by the American Red Cross to aid in a relief effort for more than 2,000 families affected by flooding in 20 California counties.
Kansas volunteers are either working now or will soon be assigned to the San Francisco and Santa Barbara areas, said Bill Hamelau, executive director of the Midway-Kansas Chapter in Wichita, the state's coordinating chapter.
Five Red Cross "Emergency Response Vehicles'' that normally are stationed in Kansas also have been sent to California to assist in mobile feeding and distribution of emergency supplies.
Kansans who have been unable to contact friends and relatives in the flood-stricken areas can contact the local Red Cross chapter for assistance.
Those wishing to make a donation to the relief effort can mail it to the "American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund'' at any local chapter, or by mailing it to "Disaster Relief Fund,'' P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013.
