For the second time in 20 years, the Lawrence Board of Realtors has bestowed a Distinguished Service Award.

Warren Mitchell, of Mitchell Agency Inc., received the award, which he said was one of the highlights of his 47-year sales career.

"I think I noticed my heart beating a little faster when I heard my name," Mitchell said. "Then I thought, 'I think maybe that's me.' I have enough of an ego that it was quite meaningful."

Also presented at the board's annual banquet on Saturday night at Lawrence Country Club were Salesperson of the Year and Realtor of the Year. The recipients of these awards were nominated by one of the 220 members of the Realtor's Board.

"All three of the awards have to do with the image the Realtor presents to the community," said Becky Carter, the board's executive vice president.

Mitchell's nomination was signed by every member of the Gill Agency, Carter said. The award has only been presented to a Lawrence real estate agent one other time in the past two decades.

Leta White of McGrew Real Estate was named Realtor of the Year, an award representing consistent service and excellence in the field.

White said she was surprised to get the award because there were so many deserving members of the organization.

Terry Platz of Stephens Real Estate received the Salesperson of the Year Award for the second time in her 20-year career.

"Any award given to you by your peers means a lot," Platz said. "It's been more important to me to make a friend than a sale, and that's very rewarding."

Kay Wertzberger, newly elected president of the board, said the awards were a compliment to the agents.

"The nice thing is that they are awards given by the whole board and not just individual agencies to their salespeople, Wertzberger said. "They all earned it."
