An Overland Park man remained hospitalized this morning in Topeka with injuries he suffered Wednesday evening in a one-vehicle accident west of Lawrence.
A spokeswoman at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center said information about David C. Westphal's condition and his injuries was being withheld at his family's request.
A dispatcher for the Kansas Highway Patrol said Westphal, 50, was injured shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday in an accident on U.S. Highway 40, east of Kanwaka Corner. The accident site is about three miles west of Lawrence. The KHP said this morning Westphal was in critical condition as of 6 a.m.
Westphal was eastbound on U.S. 40 when his 1993 Honda apparently drifted off the road. The dispatcher said Westphal is believed to have overcorrected to get the vehicle back onto the road, causing it to run off into the south ditch. According to the preliminary accident report, the vehicle flipped at least two times and Westphal was thrown through the sunroof. He was not wearing a seat belt.
