Why doesn't Lawrence High School have an athletic trainer to support sports activities? Wouldn't the cost of a trainer be less than the potential liability for not having one?
"This year we do have one, Matt Comeau, provided for the school through Mt. Oread (Medical Arts Centre) and Dr. Ken Wertzberger," said Ron Commons, LHS athletic director. "He's on duty 40 hours a week -- 20 hours of his duty time is at Mt. Oread and the other 20 hours at Lawrence High School."
Commons said Comeau, who is a certified athletic trainer and an emergency medical technician, worked with the football program this fall. He will work with girls and boys varsity basketball this winter and with baseball in the spring.
This year, the service is being provided at no cost to the district, but Commons said it's his hope the position will become a permanent position funded by the district.
