— DeSoto Days isn't just for DeSoto residents, a key organizer said.

"I hope people will come from out of town and say, 'Hey, that's a neat town. Let's come back,'" said Mary Payne, chair of the event's organizing committee.

To bring in visitors, the committee is spreading the word about DeSoto Days more than a month before the event will take place. The festival is scheduled for Sept. 30 with related events taking place on other days.

"The city's growing, so we're trying to make the festival grow with it," she said.

DeSoto Days kicks off with a children's parade at 10 a.m. Sept. 30, featuring prizes for best-decorated bicycle and best costume in two divisions.

Little Miss DeSoto and Little Mr. DeSoto will be selected during the event, which also features an array of crafts booths, concession stands and games.

Entertainment will be featured throughout the day. Country and western bands, a banjo band and a storyteller are among the attractions, Payne said.

A street dance caps off the day.

Other DeSoto Days events include an apple bake-off, a golf tournament on Oct. 1 and a softball tournament on Sept. 23.

Payne said the town would be festooned with welcome signs and decorations on light poles. DeSoto merchants planned to paint their windows, she said.

For a full list of events, visitors can stop by Morse's Market, where the committee has posted a DeSoto Days bulletin board.
