Three Journal-World staff members were among winners in the Kansas Press Women Communications Contest. Awards were presented at the organization's spring meeting Saturday in Manhattan.
Jan Biles, a J-W copy editor, won second place in the contest's overall "sweepstakes" category for work she did at the Hutchinson News before coming to Lawrence. Her awards included: Firsts in special articles, single page regularly edited by the entrant, lifestyle or entertainment pages, lifestyle or entertainment section, single page or pages other than lifestyle, page layout and headlines; and second place for personal columns.
Ann Gardner, J-W editorial page editor, won second place awards in categories for page layout and single page or pages regularly edited by the entrant.
Sherry Pigg, a J-W staff writer, received first place for special articles on education, and second and third places for feature stories, all written for the Topeka Capital-Journal before she came to the Journal-World.
Carol Francis, Lawrence, also was among local award-winners, winning first place for non-fiction books edited by the entrant, second for a single radio commercial and third and honorable mention for speeches.
First-place entries have been entered in the National Federation of Press Women Communications Contest, which will announce winners during the annual NFPW conference in July.
