LAKE QUIVIRA — Coach Charlie Lauts figures a little practice could go a long way for Lawrence High's girls golf team.
The Lions opened their season by finishing sixth in the 13-team Shawnee Mission Northwest Invitational on Wednesday at Lake Quivira.
"We were only four strokes out of fourth place," Lauts said, "and that's easily taken off the scorecard with a little practice."
Topeka Washburn Rural won the tournament with a score of 198, followed by Shawnee Heights and Overland Park Aquinas (204 each), SM South (216), Blue Valley Northwest (217) and Lawrence (220).
LHS junior Lindsay Gentry placed fifth by carding a 45. Erica Neuschafer shot 54, Shannon Summey 59 and Megan Englebrake 62.
The Lions will compete in the Blue Valley North Invitational on Tuesday at Leawood South.
