Condition reports

  • Three people remained hospitalized this morning with injuries they suffered shortly before midnight Saturday in a two-vehicle accident south of Lawrence on U.S. Highway 59.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported this morning that the accident occurred about 11:50 p.m., three miles south of Lawrence, when a northbound 1983 Ford truck driven by Sherry H. Bateson, 30, Topeka, drove left of center and sideswiped a southbound 1990 Oldsmobile, driven by Catherine A. Hogan, 17, Arlington Heights, Ill.

Cheree Sharkan, 18, Wilmette, Ill., a passenger in Hogan's car, was transported from the scene to the Kansas University Medical Center by LifeStar Air Ambulance. She was listed in serious condition this morning in an intensive care unit. Hogan and another passenger in her car, Christine Sebastian, 18, Arlington Heights, Ill., were both listed in fair condition this morning at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Bateson was treated and released from LMH and then booked into Douglas County Jail on outstanding Douglas County warrants for driving under the influence and driving while her license was suspended, the patrol said.
