A play based on a homosexual love story opened Friday to a protest from the Rev. Fred Phelps and followers of the controversial Topeka minister.
Lawrence police said a small group led by Phelps, widely known for his anti-gay views, picketed the Renegade Youth Theater, 518 E. Eighth, during the premiere of "Annie on My Mind," based on a novel about two teen-age girls who fall in love.
Two Olathe high schools took the book off their library shelves last year, prompting a suit from the American Civil Liberties Union.
The Renegade Youth Theater staged its original ``Annie'' production under the banner ``Banned Book Theater.''
Police reported no problems stemming from the Phelps protest.
