BAILEYVILLE, KAN. Mass of Christian burial services, for Viola M. Schmidt, 77, Baileyville, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville with the Rev. Roderic Gillar officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Baileyville.
Mrs. Schmidt died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 1994, at her home.
She was born Feb. 27, 1917, near Seneca, the daughter of Leo. G. and Frances C. Schaeffler Roeder. She grew up in the Seneca area and completed high school in Seneca. She was co-owner and manager of Schmidt's Motel in Baileyville for several years and then worked at Crestview Manor in Seneca for several years. She served as a chiropractic assistant for Dr. Jerome Hermes in Seneca until her retirement.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Church and a member and past president of the St. Ann's Altar Sodality, both in Baileyville, and a member of the Benedictine Oblates. She was a past president and active member in the local Mental Retardation Organization.
She married Leo J. Schmidt on Aug. 29, 1939, in Seneca. He survives.
Other survivors include a son, Robert J., Overland Park; four daughters, Mary Ann Sherberg, Kansas City, Mo., Jean Stillmock, Omaha, Neb., Alice Sullivan, Marietta, Ga., and Donna Heffner, Lawrence; two brothers, Alfred Roeder and Melvin Roeder, both of Seneca; and seven grandchildren.
A son, Regis, died in 1940, and another son, James, died in 1993.
Rosaries will be said at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. today at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
The family suggests memorials be sent in care of the family to Community Hospice or to the Johnson County Mental Retardation Center.
