If the van that recently was donated was so old the Senior Center couldn't use it safely anymore, why is it in the hands of the Boys and Girls Club now?
"It wasn't given to us because it was so old the Senior Center had to get rid of it," said John Alesch, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence.
The Senior Center typically gets a new van every couple of years and offered the Boys and Girls Club the 1988 model van, plus $2,000 for new paint and tires and any necessary maintenance, Alesch said.
"Before we accepted it, we had a mechanic check it out," he said.
The club will probably keep its old van, a 1984 model, as a backup if the board of directors can figure out a way to insure both vehicles, Alesch said.
