A fire that destroyed a barn in rural Lawrence Sunday afternoon killed 16 goats that were inside.
Sheriff's officers and Wakarusa Township firefighters were called to the fire about 5:54 p.m. Sunday at 1004 E. 1600 Rd., about two miles south of Lawrence.
The barn and its contents were valued on a sheriff's report at $12,095.
"The barn was fully engulfed when we got there," said Wakarusa Fire Chief Louie McElhaney.
Authorities were able to save only one of 17 goats that were in the barn. The structure also housed hay, lumber and plywood.
The barn is owned by Ron Dalquest, a retired Lawrence police officer.
The cause of the fire still is under investigation, but authorities have ruled out arson.
