Why is there talk of building more swimming pools when the indoor pool is closed on holidays and throughout the month of August?

Swimming pools require maintenance, and the indoor pool, known as the Carl Knox Natatorium, gets its maintenance during August, Fred DeVictor, Lawrence director of parks, said.

Because the natatorium is shared between the city and school district, and the outdoor pool is only accessible in warm weather, the facilities cannot keep up with demand for aquatic programs, he said. Many programs have waiting lists.

"Whether it's lap swimming, public swimming, swimming lessons, fitness programs -- I could go on and on," he said. "With additional facilities, we can develop more of a comprehensive aquatic program."
