I read in the paper that the Convention and Visitors Bureau gets $357,000 from guest tax money. Isn't that a wing of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce? Is tax money supporting a chamber of commerce project?
Yes, the city contracts with the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce to operate a Convention and Visitors Bureau, which in turn promotes and develops tourism in Lawrence, said Judy Billings, the bureau's director. The transient guest tax, a 4 percent city tax assessed to hotel and motel rooms in Lawrence, finances the bureau.
In 1993, the bureau received $320,000 in guest tax funds. This year, $350,000 is budgeted for advertising, festivals, administrative salaries and other related costs.
"We're always working to bring people in, and spend their money in Lawrence," Billings said.
