I would like to know how many of the current city commissioners have actually grown up in Lawrence.
None of the five city commissioners grew up in Lawrence, but all professed a love for the town once they arrived.
Jo Andersen moved to Lawrence in 1964, leaving Shreveport, La., at age 17 to attend Kansas University.
"I absolutely, totally, grew up in Lawrence," said Andersen, who was born in Wichita. "Before I was 17, I had not grown up yet."
Doug Compton, born and raised in Wellington, moved to Lawrence in 1978 to attend KU. He graduated in 1982 and started his own business. "I fell in love with Lawrence and I have no intent of ever leaving," he said.
Bob Moody came to Lawrence 1975, also to attend KU. He was born in Norton, raised in Almena and briefly attended Colby Junior College.
John Nalbandian moved to Lawrence in 1976. He was born in New York and raised in Los Angeles, where he attended college at the University of Southern California.
Bob Schulte has lived in Lawrence since 1970, with the exception of a three-year stint in Aspen, Colo. He grew up in St. Louis, then moved to Leawood and onto Chicago before coming to KU for school, and is now married with three children. "I live with four Lawrencians," he said.
