A Life Flight helicopter airlifted two elderly people from an accident scene on the Kansas Turnpike this morning after the car they were in jumped a guardrail and flipped onto an embankment, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported.
Both people, a man and a woman, are believed to be from Topeka. They were taken to the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. Their condition was unknown at presstime. A witness said the woman showed no signs of consciousness while authorities responded to the emergency.
Witnesses said the car appeared to be traveling about 70 mph when it hit a guardrail, spiraled through the air and came to rest on its roof 50 feet to 60 feet away. The accident occurred at about 10 a.m. about 6 miles east of the East Lawrence turnpike interchange.
Neither person was thrown from the vehicle, witnesses said.
