Services for Jerry L. Cares, 59, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary with the Rev. Rod Hinkle officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Cares died Saturday, Dec. 10, 1994, at his home.
He was born Aug. 9, 1935, in Parsons, the son of R.L. and Melba Stevenson Cares.
He graduated from McCune High School in McCune and obtained a criminal justice degree in Williamsburg, Mo.
Mr. Cares worked for the Parsons Police Department until joining the Kansas Highway Patrol in 1965. He was stationed at Lyndon until 1978 when he moved to Lawrence where he was sergeant for Jefferson and Douglas counties. He retired from the patrol in 1987 and then worked for Kansas University until 1993.
He married Martha Shaughnessy on March 1, 1955, in Miami, Okla. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Teresa Carnagie, Eudora, and Tammy Hart, Lawrence; one son, Neil Cares, Topeka; a brother, Dean Cares, Parsons; and seven grandchildren.
Friends may call from noon today until service time on Wednesday at the mortuary. The family will meet with friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.
The family suggests memorials to Hospice of Douglas County or the Kansas University Cancer Center. They may be sent in care of the mortuary.
