Police turned a 13-year-old Lawrence boy over to his parents early Sunday after he allegedly hid in a local store after it closed and tried to steal merchandise.
According to reports and police Sgt. Rick Nickell, the boy hid in a box in the stockroom at The Half Price Store, 2727 Iowa, before the store closed at 11 p.m. Saturday.
After employees left, the boy gathered a number of items, including clothes and watches, from throughout the store. Some of the merchandise was stuffed into backpacks from the store, and the boy wore the remainder, Nickell said.
About 1:50 a.m., police answered a burglar alarm at the store, Nickell said, and saw the boy standing outside the front door, which had its window broken out. The boy ran, but was caught by officers.
Damage to the store's door was listed on a police report at $250. The lengthy list of merchandise was valued at a total of $1,447. All of the merchandise was recovered.
His first appearance in the juvenile division of Douglas County District Court is set for Jan. 9.
