Although Robert McCain didn't realize what he was getting himself into when agreed to direct and sponsor the first Miss Lawrence USA pageant, he recognized the good that will come out of it once it's under way.
Not to be confused with the Miss Lawrence America pageant, the Miss Lawrence USA pageant will feature about 20 hopefuls from around the state. They will compete all day Sunday at Liberty Hall, with the swimsuit and evening gown competition beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door.
The winner of the local pageant will advance to the Miss Kansas USA pageant and from there to the national Miss USA pageant.
The Miss Teen Lawrence USA pageant also will be held Sunday.
"The thing that probably makes this most different is that there's no talent competition," McCain explained.
He said he was asked to develop and direct the event after judging a couple of competitions.
Contestants for Miss Teen Lawrence USA must between the ages of 13 and 18. Miss Lawrence USA contestants must be between 18 and 26 years old.
McCain said contestants from Kansas cities ranging from Lawrence to Emporia have applied.
He said he was a little nervous about what he hoped would become an annual event but remained optimistic it would go smoothly.
"I think it's going to be cool," he said.
