Manhattan The Lawrence Journal-World won three first-place awards in the 1994 Kansas Press Assn.'s awards of excellence competition, including top honor for general excellence.
The other first-place awards came in the categories of sports pages and sport writing. The winners of the competition were announced Friday at an awards banquet during the KPA's annual competition in Manhattan.
In the general excellence category, judges' comments described the Journal-World as "well-designed, good looking and just begging to be read."
The first place in sports writing went to associate sports editor Gary Bedore for his coverage of the Jayhawks reaching the Final Four in 1993.
In comments, sports pages judges said photos and graphics were exceptional and cited the overall variety of local stories and consistent quality of the pages.
Other awards received by the Journal-World were second place in editorial writing, third place for editorial pages, second place to Andrew Hartsock in sports writing, third place to Kurt Caywood for sports feature writing and second place in special sections for the annual KU edition.
Honorable mentions were received by chief photographer Mike Yoder for feature photography and Andrew Nachison for column writing.
