I saw some tree cutting in Burcham Park the other day, and it didn't seem to me like they were taking out dead trees. Instead, it looked like they were clearing some sort of path through the middle of the park. Are they?
"Correct on all counts," said George Osborne, the city's superintendent of parks and forestry.
The trees were cut down by a contractor hired by Kansas Power and Light for a power line easement, Osborne said.
KPL is upgrading a power line from 69,000 volts to 115,000 volts, said Steve Johnson, division manager.
Residents of the Pinckney neighborhood, concerned about the higher voltage, urged KPL last summer to relocate the power line from Fifth Street, he said.
KPL ultimately decided to move the line east of the railroad tracks and follow the tracks to the power plant northwest of Lawrence, Johnson said.
If weather permits, the line's construction should be completed by Aug. 1, he said.
