A motorcyclist was seriously injured and a motorist suffered minor injuries Saturday evening in separate accidents near Lawrence.
The accidents occurred within one-half hour and about one-quarter mile of each other less than a mile south of the city on U.S. Highway 59, authorities reported.
The motorcyclist, Jerry D. Coble, 34, rural Baldwin, was listed in critical condition early today at the Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan.
Douglas County sheriff's officers reported that the first accident, reported shortly after 7 p.m., occurred when a vehicle driven south by a female motorist veered off the road, went out of control and tipped on its side. She was not identified by presstime.
The vehicle came to rest on the west shoulder of the northbound lanes. Firefighters and paramedics extricated the woman from the vehicle and transported her to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
The second accident was reported at 7:36 p.m. just south of the first wreck.
Coble was transported by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, then was taken by Life Flight helicopter to the medical center.
A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper who investigated the accident said Coble was northbound when the motocycle went off the left edge of the road. The trooper said it was unclear what caused the cycle to veer off the road.
