A 3-year-old Lawrence boy was listed in critical condition today at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., after he fell into the family swimming pool about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
Michael Hierl, 305 Settlers Dr., was found in the pool at his home by a family member after he fell in while apparently reaching for a toy in the water, a Lawrence police spokesman said.
"We think that's what happened because he had a little toy floating on one end of the pool," said the boy's father, Peter Hierl.
Peter Hierl, who was at Children's Mercy this morning, said Michael is on a respirator at the hospital, but that he still is unconscious.
It's still too early to tell if the boy will recover quickly, he said.
It was not known how long the boy was in the water, but he was not breathing when police arrived.
He had fallen into the deep end of the pool that was eight to 10 feet deep, the spokesman said.
Michael was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and then by helicopter to Children's Mercy.
Police are investigating the incident as an accident.
