A large Kansas City, Mo., cardiology group has purchased Lawrence cardiologist John Hiebert's practice and is recruiting additional heart specialists to live and work full-time in Lawrence.
In August Hiebert was appointed to the Kansas Board of Regents, which oversees the state's university system, and he said the sale will allow him the time he needs to attend Board of Regents meetings.
Hiebert will continue to practice in Lawrence as a member of the Kansas City group, called Cardiovascular Consultants, but on a reduced schedule. He sold the assets of his practice to the group, which has hired his staff. Hiebert said several other physicians in the group have been working part time in Lawrence to relieve him of some of his work load.
The group has 16 cardiologists on staff, plus 85 other employees at its Kansas City office. The group is affiliated with St. Luke's Hospital and the Mid-America Heart Institute of Kansas City, Mo. The group said its Lawrence branch will use Lawrence Memorial Hospital for some procedures but not for specialized services such as and open heart surgery.
