Is Hy-Vee still planning to build a store at Kasold Avenue and Clinton Parkway? It seems like I haven't heard anything about it for a long time.
Funny you should ask. Since we reported earlier this fall that Hy-Vee Food Stores Inc. was soliciting bids for a general contractor, the Chariton, Iowa, company has chosen Harris Construction Co. of Lawrence to head up the project. Ruth Mitchell, spokesman for Hy-Vee, said the project was being staked out Friday and that Hy-Vee officials hoped work could begin at the 14-acre site soon.
Construction of the 65,000-square-foot supermarket will take about a year, Mitchell said. ``If we have decent weather to work through the winter, we will be open in early fall'' of 1994, she said.
The Lawrence project was announced in November 1992 when the company opened a store in Mission and announced plans for other stores in the Kansas City area. However, Hy-Vee officials said at the time that they didn't plan to begin construction until at least summer of 1993. Mitchell has said that making the announcement so far in advance of the start of construction apparently led some Lawrence residents to wonder whether the project had been abandoned.
