About 40 local vendors will break out their homebaked breads, homegrown vegetables and handmade crafts Saturday morning for this year's opening of the Farmers Market.

The market will open at 6:30 a.m. in its traditional Vermont Street home, a city parking lot between 10th and 11th streets.

The market will be open through the summer on Saturdays from 6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Lawrence City Commission proclaimed next week as ``Downtown Lawrence Farmers Market Week,'' recognizing the market as Kansas' largest and oldest, Mayor John Nalbandian said.
