The body of a man who died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound was found this morning in a Lawrence park.

The body of Robert Preisner, 55, 100 Ark., was found in Burcham Park.

A 33-year-old Lawrence man who had gone to the park said he found the body about 8:10 a.m. today. He said he found Preisner lying face down on top of a shotgun in the snow near a wooded area.

A car was parked nearby, the man said.

Police Chief Ron Olin said officials are investigating the incident as a suicide.

"This is pretty straightforward unless we find something to lead us to believe otherwise," Olin said.

Douglas County Deputy Coronor Alan Sanders said an autopsy would not be conducted.

Authorities believe the man's body was found only a few hours after he died.

Burcham Park is located along the Kansas River north of Sixth Street and west of the Kansas River Bridge.

Services for Preiser are pending at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
