Fireworks will light up the Lawrence-area sky on July 4th. Here's your fireworks and fun guide to consider when scheduling picnics and parties over the Independence Day weekend.

-- In DeSoto, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the chamber of commerce will sponsor a fireworks display that begins at dark on the Fourth. They will be set off from the senior high school.

-- In McLouth, the recreation commission will hold a co-ed softball tournament at the sports complex on the afternoon of July 4. Interested players should call Steve Robson at 796-6734 to sign up. The activities will be followed by fireworks at dark. The fire department will shoot off the fireworks from Prairie Park.

-- Although Clinton State Park officials say July 4th yields one of the parks busiest weekends, no extracurricular activities are planned.

-- Lake Perry Yacht and Marina and DJ's Rock Creek Marina at Perry Lake are providing the one-two punch in July 4th fun. The Rock Creek Marina kicks things off at 2 p.m. July 3 with a boat parade. There is a fee to participate in the parade. The evening will be topped off with fireworks launched from DJ's Sail Harbor at dark. The Marina will be unveiling the Cajun Queen, an 80-foot, triple-deck, cruise ship that will haul 250 people out on to the lake to watch the fireworks Also, the Cajun Wharf restaurant will feature live cajun music July 2-5. The Perry Marina will continue the festivities July 4 with a boat parade at 5 p.m. The live music begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by fireworks at dark.
