The Lawrence Fire Department announced today that Capt. William Stark has been promoted to the rank of battalion chief, replacing retiring Battalion Chief Robert Coleman.
Stark was one of seven department captains who competed for the position. He has been a Lawrence firefighter since 1981 and was promoted to captain in 1988.
He earned an associate degree in fire science technology from the Kansas City, Kan., Community College in 1984 and a bachelor's degree in public administration from Park College in Parkville, Mo., in 1990. He is a Kansas Certified Emergency Medical Technician.
Stark also serves as a field instructor with Kansas University Fire Service Training and is an instructor with the Kansas State Firefighter Assn.
Other Lawrence Fire Department battalion chiefs are Dan Morrow and Jerry Karr.
